Donald Trump threatens to cut Mexican remittances

 In News

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump recently threatened to cut off remittances to Mexico if the Mexican government does not pay for his proposed wall on the border between the U.S. and Mexico, according to multiple reports. The candidate has made no indication if he would attempt to seize bitcoin remittances as well.

Trump’s campaign claimed this was, “an easy decision for Mexico.” Currently, about $24 billion goes into Mexico through remittances, although there is not data on how much comes from undocumented immigrants.

“It (remittances) serves as de facto welfare for poor families in Mexico. There is no significant social safety net provided by the state in Mexico,” Trump’s campaign said in a statement.

Trump’s campaign claimed it would drop this proposal if the Mexican government agrees to pay for his wall.
