Legislation Considered Pursuant to a Rule:

H.R. 2639 Strength in Diversity Act of 2020 [PDF] This legislation offered by Rep. Marcia Fudge would direct the U.S. Department of Education to award grants for the purpose of building racial and socioeconomic diversity in public schools authorizing such sums as necessary through 2025. This legislation is based on an education program established during the Obama administration known as that Opening Doors, Expanding Opportunities Program.

H.R. 2574 Equity and Inclusion Enforcement Act of 2019 [PDF] This legislation offered by Rep. Bobby Scott would allow students to sue schools over policies that cause race discrimination. Such claims would be filed regarding “disparate impact.” This bill would legislate a response to a 2001 Supreme Court opinion, Alexander v. Sandoval, which held that Title VI does not provide a private right of action to enforce “disparate impact.”

H.R. 2694 Pregnant Workers Fairness Act [PDF] This legislation offered by Rep. Jerry Nadler would require employers to provide certain accommodations for pregnant employees or job applicants. This legislation would address a 2015 Supreme Court opinion, Young v. United Parcel Service, Inc.
